The Wuchang Uprising begins

The Wuchang Uprising begins on October 10, 1911, becoming a major turning point in the revolution against the Qing dynasty.

Soldiers of the New Army in Wuchang rebelled after an accidental explosion exposed revolutionary activity. They attacked the regional government and established control of the city, encouraging other provinces to break with Qing rule.

The uprising helped set in motion the 1911 Revolution. The wider movement led to the end of the Qing dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China in 1912; October 10 is remembered as the uprising's starting date.
