The People's Republic of China is proclaimed

Mao Zedong proclaims the establishment of the People's Republic of China in Beijing on October 1, 1949.

The proclamation followed Communist military victories in the Chinese Civil War. The new government took control of mainland China, while Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalist government subsequently withdrew to Taiwan.

The announcement reshaped diplomacy in East Asia during the early Cold War. The United States and the new government in Beijing did not establish formal diplomatic relations at that time, and the division across the Taiwan Strait continued.
