Apollo 11 lands on the Moon

Apollo 11's lunar module Eagle lands on the Moon on July 20, 1969, at about 20:17 UTC, with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin aboard.

Armstrong and Aldrin descended to the lunar surface in Eagle while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module Columbia. Their successful landing made Apollo 11 the first crewed mission to reach the Moon's surface.

The landing and the first step occurred on different UTC dates. NASA's event timeline places the landing at 20:17 UTC on July 20 and Armstrong's first step at 02:56 UTC on July 21. In U.S. Eastern Daylight Time, both events fell on July 20.
